A very common job interview question at companies like Microsoft and Google, for both technical and non-technical positions, is some variation of: “Tell me how you would determine if a list of items has one or more duplicates?” As usual, you should first carefully qualify the question to a.) make sure you understand it, and b.) let your interviewer know that any such question has a lot of ambiguity in it (either by accident or by purpose). The naive, Computer Science 101 style answer is to use nested for-loops. For example, if the list contains the n=five names “Adam”, “Brad”, “Cade”, “Doug”, “Earl” then something like:
for (int i = 0; i < list.Length; ++i)
{
 string currentName = list[i];
 for (int j = i+1; j < list.Length; ++j)
 {
   if (list[j] == currentName)
     return true; // duplicate
 }
}
return false; // no duplicate found
This is a fairly bad solution in many situation because in the worst case the number of string comparisons is the sum of the first n-1 integers which is ((n) * (n-1)) / 2 which is O(n-squared). The next step up in sophistication would be to demonstrate your knowledge of hash tables. The algorithm might go like: create a hash table of the n string values, then iterate through the list one time, checking if the current value is in the hash table. Well, this is pretty basic stuff and might satisfy the interviewer for many non-developer job positions. However, the problem is actually quite deep and there are many surprising alternative solutions which generally involve a time-storage tradeoff of some sort.
