Last week I was observing a hiring interview at Microsoft for a Web developer position. The interviewer asked the job candidate to explain whether ASP.NET validation controls used client-side validation or server-side validation. Performing Web form user input validation is a fundamental task for Web developers. The interview question was somewhat of a trick because ASP.NET will perform client-side validation using automatically generated JavaScript if possible, but will use server-side validation using automatically generated C# if client-side validation is not possible (for example if JavaScript is disabled on the client). Another way to explain ASP.NET validation controls is to give a quick example of a custom validator:
asp:CustomValidator id=”cv1″ runat=”server”
ControlToValidate=”TextBox1″
ClientValidationFunction=”MyClientValidator”
OnServerValidate=”MyServerValidator”
ErrorMessage=”Input Error!”
asp:CustomValidator
Here, client-side validation will be performed by a programmer-defined JavaScript function named MyClientValidator() if possible, or server-side validation will be performed by a programmer-defined C# function named MyServerValidator() if client-side validation is not possible.
